At a depot in Eastern Iowa in March 1944 eighteen year-old Army Private Asher Schroeder waved goodbye to his parents as he left to serve in Western Europe during WWII. Soldiers, many of them teenagers, had no idea of what was ahead of them. Little did Asher know the atrocities that were ahead of him as a POW in the infamous Bad Orb Stalag 9B or how bittersweet April 2, 1945 would forever be. It's still hard to fathom the tragedy and triumph of one day, but seventy-two years later at age 92 Asher can recall the details as if it were yesterday. Everyday since then he's had a grateful heart. He said it was hard for him to be negative as he was one of the survivors, that so many others.
